Eight is Great!

Eight out of 10 Americans would go to church at Christmas and Easter if someone would invite them.
Let's invite our neighbors, friends, family, and co-workers by going the extra mile.

What is the extra mile?

In Matthew 5:41, Jesus says "And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two." This simple instruction is what is known as "the extra mile". The extra mile is when you do more than what was asked of you. The extra mile is when you go farther for someone than they expected.

Why go the extra mile

People who go the extra mile stand out. It is on the extra mile that your companion who asked you to go with them will now ask you why you are going further. It is at that moment that you will have the opportunity to not only show them your good deeds, but you will be able to share with them the good news of Jesus.

how to go the extra mile

use this list of ideas to get you thinking about how you can go the extra mile for your friends, family, neighbors, co-workers and other people that you meet.

  • Pay for someone’s dinner at a restaurant, or meal in a drive-thru (the person behind you), or groceries at the store.
  • Wash your neighbor’s car (but ask first).
  • Rake a neighbor’s yard (simply ask first).
  • Mow a neighbor’s lawn; offer free landscaping (definitely ask first).
  • Take flowers to the nursing station at a hospital for the nurses.
  • Purchase a restaurant or movie theater gift card, attach a quick encouraging note about enjoying a date night, and give it to a married couple.
  • After dining, go all out and leave the wait staff a tip that matches the amount due! (example if the total comes to $50 match the tip with $50...tipping 100%)
  • Bring doughnuts (or a healthy treat, like cut-up fruit) to work.
  • Offer to babysit for a single mom for free.
  • Buy a ‘Lyft Card’ to help people with transportation
  • Let the person behind you at the supermarket checkout with only one or two items go ahead of you.
  • Gift Cards / Gift Baskets for Teachers
  • Bake cookies & take them to your neighbor
  • Give a neighbor a bag of microwave popcorn, and a Redbox code for a family movie night.
  • Know someone who just had a baby or other major life event? Bring a meal, and offer to clean up their house or do a load of laundry for them.
  • Give a bouquet of flowers to a widow and let her know she can always ride with you to church (and have someone to sit with too!)
  • Invite neighbors over for dinner (tell them you will not sell them anything).
  • Give your neighbors gift baskets!
  • Purchase a pack of diapers for a family with a new baby.
  • While filling up your vehicle at the gas station offer to fill up the person’s vehicle beside you.
  • Then on the extra mile, when your companion asks why you are going the extra mile with them, use this "It's Paid For" card to show them how much God loves them and invite them to join us at Joy Church. You can pick up these cards at church.

Stop enduring life. Start enjoying life!
